Synergy '12
PIEAS Thematic Society’s showpiece event for 2012, Synergy ’12, was held on the 28th of November. The main purpose of the
competition was to involve promising technical minds in developing socially and economically viable solutions to Pakistan’s energy problem.
Six teams participated in this closely-contested intra-PIEAS affair, at the end of which MS Class of ’13 emerged as victors and were crowned ‘Deans’
Batch of the Year’.
The teams, representing the 6 batches of MS and BS, were picked by the faculty advisor assigned to each batch. All teams comprised of 8 members; 2 each
representing the Government and Private Sectors respectively, and a Think Tank of 4 members. The modus operandi was such
that the private sector of each team first presented their solution to the Energy Crisis, complete with its technical
and economic details. The Government Sector then established the feasibility of the proposed solution in the light of Pakistan’s political, financial, and social
situation, and how the aforementioned solution would be practically implemented.
The role of the Think Tank was to identify loopholes in opponents’ strategies and raise valid questions about them.
The Government and Private Sectors were allocated a total of 8 minutes to present their case, while 6 minute were reserved for questions by the jury and/or oppos
ing Think Tanks. The Jury Panel for Synergy ’12 included Dean Engineering Dr. Javed Hyder, Dean Applied Sciences Dr. Mutawarra Hussain, and Dean
Research Dr. Khalid Jamil. The Chief Guests for the afternoon were Founder PIEAS Prof. Dr. Inam-ur-Rehman, and Rector PIEAS Dr. Muhammad Aslam. The
event was well-attended by the student body, as well as the notables of PIEAS.
Special credit to the faculty advisors Dr. Waseem Saddique, Dr. M Tayyab Javaid, Dr. Tanveer Abbas, Dr. Nasir Jadoon, Mr. M Abdul Basit, and Mr. M
Usman, who selected the teams and prepared them for the competition. Innovative, cutting-edge ideas were put forward by the competing teams,
ranging from radical new sustainable energy projects to revamped conventional ones. They were backed up with research on Pakistan’s geo-political situation and economic capacity, leading to an interesting and
informative debate between the presenters and opposing Think Tanks.
At the end of a hard-fought battle, MS Class of ’13 walked away with the Deans’ Trophy and cash prize.
Synergy ’12 fulfilled its purpose of bringing new fuel solutions to the forefront, as well as involving students in the problem-solving process.
PTS plans to bring back the event this year on an even larger scale, as Synergy’ 13.
