PIEAS Safety Policy

The main objective of this safety policy is to enhance the safety culture in PIEAS for reducing the risks to the University community (including Staff, Faculty and Students), and the Environment. The policy aims to address all facets of safety that include fire safety, health safety, occupational safety, industrial safety and the environmental safety. It also aims to highlight suitable steps for awareness raising of the staff, faculty, and students undertake their assignments/activities while protecting themselves, the co-workers, equipment/facility and the environment. We believe that the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff are of the greatest importance.

A new division namely PIEAS Safety Division (PSD) has been constituted at PIEAS vide O.M. No. 43/2017, dated 10-10-2017. The division consists of an HoD, a Secretary and other suitable persons/heads of divisions at PIEAS. The division administers and implements the occupational health and safety policies and procedures promulgated by the University Authorities. It has been ensured that the specialization of the Members of the division encompass all safety related areas such as radiation safety, biological safety, chemical and laboratory safety, occupational/workplace safety and health and environmental safety.

The safety programs at PIEAS encompass the following major elements. The success of our efforts depends on all of us working together and accepting self-responsibility for our safety and that of our co-workers. No job is so important and no service is so urgent to undertake jeopardizing Safety.

1. 1. The most important element is you. You are responsible for ensuring that all your activities result in an acceptable level of risk to you, to the others present, to the general population, and to the environment.
2. 2. Your immediate supervisor is responsible for keeping you apprised of the approved procedures and information related to health and safety of your activities.
3. 3. Your work authorizing person is responsible to ensure that all work involving hazardous substances, radioactive materials or radiation producing devices is conducted with full regard for personnel safety and in accordance with the laboratory manuals/procedures and regulations etc.
4. 4. Your section/department head is responsible for establishing and maintaining a work environment which fosters the appropriate health and safety procedures in all activities of the section/department.
5. 5. Your safety Supervisor audits the general physical conditions and operational procedures, seeks resolution of recognizable safety and health problems and acts accordingly in liaison with the relevant safety Coordinator at the PSD.
6. 6. The PIEAS Safety Division with the approval of higher authorities administers the health and safety program at the University, and provides professional assistance and expertise to members of the University community in matters of occupational health and safety.
7. 7. The PIEAS Safety Division keeps a close liaison with the Safety Directorate at PAEC and other outside organizations to provide appropriate guidance/training to the workers at various Labs and Sections at the University.
