PhD Program

As a result of pursing a well coordinated research program, PIEAS has produced about 80 PhD graduates in advanced areas of Science and Technology during last five years. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that the research activities leading to PhD is aligned with National need in the realm of socio-economic development. PIEAS has the honor of producing high quality man power which forms the back bone of national strategic programs. These graduates are working at leadership positions in various prestigious organizations of the country.

Publications in Last Five Years

It is again the auspicious outcome of our research program that PIEAS faculty and researchers have produced about 700 publications in the last five years. The work done by PIEAS faculty and researchers has application in industry which is reflected by wide citation of these publications.

Quality Research Focus

One of the main features of research at PIEAS is the PhD program which distinguishes PIEAS from other universities. For smooth running of PhD program, PIEAS has established Dean Research office. All the activities of this office are supervised by Dean Research PIEAS. The Dean Research office recommends and promulgates new research policy and oversees its implementation. The office formulates PhD rules and regulations through various PIEAS bodies including Council for Graduate Studies and Research (CGSR) and Academic Committee (AC). It coordinates with other PIEAS departments for successful running of the program.The highly qualified PIEAS faculty (with more than 80 PhDs) has an extensive PhD program in various fields of modern science and technology. The areas of research range from Nano Technology to Nuclear Engineering on one hand and from Bio Technology to Nuclear Medicine on the other. The main features of PIEAS PhD program are:

	Stringent criterion for admission in PhD
	Completion of research related course work before starting research work
	Qualifying examinations (Departmental and Subject qualifying exams)
	Publication of papers in ISI indexed Journals with high impact factor
	Thesis evaluation from foreign professors from technologically advanced countries

Keeping in view the infrastructure and number of PIEAS faculty, the number of PhD graduates per year is very healthy. It is worth mentioning that after getting degree awarding status in year 2000, PIEAS produced its first PhD graduate in year 2004. Dr. Imran Rafiq Chughtai was the first PhD graduate of PIEAS who defended his PhD thesis on March 15, 2004. Since then more than 90 scholars have completed their PhD in various areas of research. Presently more than 150 PhD students are registered in various departments of PIEAS in cutting edge technologies. Department-wise enrollment of PhD students at PIEAS is given below:

Affiliated Institutes

In addition to looking after all the matters of research students registered in various departments at PIEAS, the Dean Research office also takes care of PhD students of the affiliated institutes like National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) Faisalabad and Karachi Institute of Power Engineering (KINPOE) Karachi. Presently more than 60 PhD students of NIBGE are also registered at PIEAS.

The affiliation of Nuclear Institute of Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) and National Institute of Lasers and Optics (NILOP) with Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) is nearing completion. This affiliation will add another 20 PhD scholars in the ambient of PIEAS research activities.
